Electronics can harm you!  We all know this, right?  I read an article where a guy blew off his b@lls when his cell phone’s battery blew up in his pocket. Electronics are dangerous by nature, but they also hold some hidden dangers that the common person may not be thinking about when using them.

Most of us carry around smart phones that are fully enabled with all the bells and whistles.  Who would ever think that those bells and whistles could help you violate your own privacy.  Check your settings right now and you may be surprised to see that you have “GPS ENABLED”.  Enabling GPS helps with tracking your location and check-ins with Apps like Google search, Facebook, Foursqure and Gowalla.   Most people leave the GPS mode on unless they are trying to save battery life. GPS enabled apps make life much easier and help you find the nearest “anything”.  You also need GPS if you are using your phone as a navigation system.  Phone navigation systems are great because there is never a map to update and many of the newer ones include real-time traffic updates.

The hidden danger is that when you upload photos taken that are GEO TAGGED(taken with GPS enabled) to photo sharing sites, you may be giving out more information than you intend. What if you take a picture of your children and a child predator is looking at your photos.  Those innocent Christmas morning photos by the tree may just be telling perverts and predators exactly where you live.  In a less sinister way, it also can let thieves know that you are away from home because many of the Meta data includes the date and time of the photo.

The host of the popular Myth Busters TV Show posted a picture to TwitPic and let his home address get out there. This is a real problem if a celebrity posts cell phone images to Twitter or other social network sites.

IcanStalkU.com offers quick tutorials on how to disable Geo Tagging on your camera phone. It may be a good idea to check it out when you have some free time.  In talking to many of our associates, we learned that several of them were unaware that their location was being saved and posted in some instances.
